Teen drivers

Ready for the road, safely.

It can be a scary thing to learn how to drive for the first time, but we know how to make teens feel ready to get on the road safely. We have taught thousands of teens to drive and helped them pass their driver's test with flying colors.

We pick you up at home or school for a two-hour private driving lesson that includes useful techniques and practice on the freeway and in traffic. Our instructors' top priority is safe driving and safe parking.

Our teachers make it their goal to make each lesson easy, fun, useful and most of all safe. We help you relax and focus on good driving principles. With teens, a good foundation as a driver is key.

Adult drivers

Licensed, at last.

Getting a driver's license is essential for a job and livelihood, especially for adults. Our experienced, certified driving instructors have taught thousands of adult drivers with respect and patience.

Adults may have no one to practise with, or no car available to them. Taking lessons with A+ Driving School lets you get as much practice as you need, in our car, on your schedule.

Many of our adult students are getting licensed for the first time, or returning to driving after years away. Same instructors, same cars, with the pace adjusted to you.

Senior drivers

Stay safe and confident in modern traffic.

A+ Driving School provides evaluations and refresher courses for senior drivers. We have worked with hundreds of seniors to help them remain safe and competent drivers in today's traffic conditions.

A refresher lesson is a relaxed two hours in our dual-control car: a check of habits, an update on newer road rules and roundabouts, and practice in the situations you find hardest, such as freeway merging or night driving.

Families often book an evaluation for a parent. We give honest, respectful feedback and a plan, not a verdict.

California DMV requirements for teens

Permit at 15½, license at 16.

Summarised from the DMV's provisional licensing rules. Fees and forms change, so confirm the current details at dmv.ca.gov before your visit.

Instruction permit

Be at least 15½ years old
Complete a DMV-approved driver education course and bring the completion certificate
Original or certified birth certificate, passport or green card, plus your Social Security number
Complete the DMV driver license application (DL 44) with a parent or guardian's signature
Pay the application fee (check the DMV handbook for the current amount)
Pass the vision test and the written permit test

Provisional driver license

Be at least 16 years old
Hold the permit for at least 6 months
Complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (we issue the certificate)
Complete 50 hours of supervised driving with a parent or guardian, 10 of them at night
Make an appointment for the DMV behind-the-wheel test
Pass the driving test in a properly registered and insured car, or use our test-day car
